Unrailed! Quickly build the railroad so you don't derail the train in this online co-op title!

Ciuf Ciuf! And the Unrailed train! it starts moving on the rails without ever stopping. What's your assignment are you wondering? Simple, build pieces of the rail to make the train proceed smoothly and without derailing. But it's not as easy as you might think, because in front of you you will find obstacles to overcome and problems to be solved quickly. The positive thing is that you will not be alone and you can count on the help of other users, together you will take the train to the next station safe and sound. The game is available for PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

Run that the train escapes you!

The title developed by the Indoor Astronaut studio and published by Daedalic Entertaiment, mother of some notable indie titles such as The Suicide of Ratchel Foster reviewed here, has no plot and the only purpose of the game is not to derail the train. You will have control of an imaginative character, which you can choose before the game, and you will build the railway through a world that is generated automatically as the train advances.

The gameplay of Unrailed! it's as simple as it is fun

The strength of Unrailed! it is a simple gameplay focused on cooperation with other online users in order to achieve the goal of not derailing the train and setting a new record. You will have few tools available at the beginning of the game: a pickaxe to break rocks and collect stone and an ax to cut trees and collect wood. These two main tools are shared with the team and are used to collect materials for the rails and simultaneously destroy obstacles to move the train forward. At each station, which represents a checkpoint, you will be able to improve the carriages of your train which will help you significantly in the progress of the game. Oh I forgot, the train goes up in flames very often and you will have to put out the fire by filling buckets of water and throwing them on the wagons!

Pixels everywhere and a view from above are a nice combination

The graphic technique chosen by the developers is pixel art, which combined with the top view gives us a complete view of everything that happens around us. The tools and the surrounding world are vaguely reminiscent of Minecraft and this is not bad at all. There are no graphic errors or bugs that prevent the game from running smoothly and everything runs smoothly.

Audio and effects postponed to September

Small sore point concerns the audio sector not too successful in involving those who play and, given the length of the games, something more could be done. Let's be clear, it's not all to be thrown away, but you could add more engaging and non-repetitive music so as not to bore the users too much in game. The sound effects on the other hand are simple and do their job cleanly and are pleasant to listen to. Particularly the noises of explosions and cracked rocks is very satisfying.

Online multiplayer even with private sessions

Unrailed! is based on a fundamental principle which is cooperation between players. Here is multiplayer with different options and game modes: sandbox, infinite, rapid and versus. In the first mode, you can immediately use all the wagons unlocked up to that moment and build the railway endlessly. In the second, the optional carriages will be available a little at a time in the stations and is playable for up to 4 players. The last, the most fun, is a challenge to two teams of up to 4 players each in which you collide with the sound of rails to see who can build longer and faster. However, I recommend playing it with friends who know each other and using an external voice chat system, as the only way to communicate in Unrailed! are the emoticons. Matchmaking is a bit cumbersome at times and it can happen that you find yourself alone in the lobby waiting for several minutes. A small problem that we hope will be resolved soon.

Verdict!

If you're looking for a sizzling and competitive title that won't get bored easily, Unrailed might be for you. Between the various challenge modes and the variety of items to unlock, Unrailed! has a good longevity. The isometric-style graphical interface is well-finished even if minimalist and the pixel art graphics vaguely recall a certain Minecraft. The only flaw are the audio sector not too well taken care of and a matchmaking that is not always efficient can make you wait in the lobby even a few minutes.
